You should receive your licence within 5–10 working daysAfter your NDLS appointment, your driving licence card is posted to your address. The standard processing time is 5–10 working days. If it's been longer than this, it's worth following up.

Can you drive while waiting?

For full licence applications and exchanges: yes — the NDLS issues a paper temporary licence at your appointment. This temporary licence is valid for driving and you should carry it with you whenever driving. It specifies an expiry date, usually 1–3 months from issue.

For learner permits: the permit card is usually issued on the day at the NDLS, so there is typically no waiting period.

If your temporary licence has expired and your card still hasn't arrived — do not driveContact the NDLS immediately if your temporary document has expired and you haven't received your card. Driving without a valid licence or valid temporary document is illegal.

Most common reasons for delays

Why your licence might be delayed

Incorrect address on your applicationThe licence is posted to the address you provided at your NDLS appointment. A typo or old address means it's gone to the wrong place. This is the most common cause of non-delivery.
Postal delaysAn Post delivery times can add 1–3 days, particularly in rural areas or during high-volume periods.
System backlog at the NDLSDuring high-demand periods, processing times can extend to 2–3 weeks. Check ndls.ie for any service notices.
Additional checks requiredIn some cases — particularly licence exchanges from non-EU countries or applications where there's a query on your record — the NDLS may need to carry out additional verification before issuing your licence.

How to chase your application

1

Wait at least 10 working days

Don't contact the NDLS immediately after your appointment — allow the full processing time. 10 working days is approximately 2 calendar weeks, excluding bank holidays.

2

Contact the NDLS

Phone: 076 108 7880 (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm). Have your application reference number ready — it's in your appointment confirmation email. Alternatively, email info@ndls.ie or use the contact form at ndls.ie.

3

Confirm your address

The NDLS will check what address your licence was posted to. If it was incorrect, they can arrange a re-issue — but this adds further delay.

4

Request an extension of your temporary licence if needed

If your temporary licence is about to expire and your card still hasn't arrived, ask the NDLS to extend your temporary document or attend the centre in person.
