Learner permit
In most cases, learner permits are issued on the day of your NDLS appointment. You leave the centre with your learner permit card in hand. In some cases, especially if there are system issues, it may be posted to you within 5 working days.
Full driving licence (after passing your test)
After your NDLS appointment, your full driving licence is posted to your registered address. Current processing times are 5–10 working days from the date of your appointment. The NDLS posts to the address on your application — make sure it's correct before you submit.
You may receive a paper temporary licence at the NDLS on the day — this is valid for driving while you wait for your card to arrive. Keep it with you when driving.
Renewal (online)
If renewing online at ndls.ie, your new licence is posted within 5–10 working days of submitting the application. You can continue using your old licence while the new one is being processed — provided it hasn't been expired for longer than the grace period allows.
Exchange (EU or non-EU)
Licence exchanges typically take 5–10 working days from the NDLS appointment. Your original foreign licence is surrendered at the appointment, so you'll need the temporary paper licence to drive in the interim.
