Driving Licence Ireland — Documents Required

Missing one document means your application is rejected on the day. Here is the complete checklist for every type of driving licence application in Ireland.

Always bring originals — not photocopiesNDLS centres do not accept photocopies of any document. If you bring a copy, your application will not be processed. Bring originals and keep copies for yourself.

Learner permit application

Identity documents

Passport or national identity cardMust be current and valid. An expired passport is not accepted even if it looks fine.
PPS numberYour PPS card, a Revenue letter showing your PPSN, or MyGovID document. Required for all applicants.

Proof of address

Utility bill or official letterMust be dated within the last 3 months. Shows your name and current Irish address. Bank statements, Revenue letters, or Intreo letters are accepted.

Theory test

Theory test pass certificateOriginal certificate. Must have been issued within the last 2 years.

Eye test

Eyesight report — form D502Completed and signed by a registered optician or GP. Must be less than 1 month old. The standard is 6/12 in the better eye (corrected if needed).

Application form

Completed D201 formDownload from ndls.ie and complete before your appointment. Do not arrive and fill it in at the counter.

Fee

€35Payable by card or cash at the NDLS centre.

Full driving licence application

After passing your driving test, bring the following to the NDLS:

Full licence documents

Driving test pass certificateOriginal. Must be within 2 years of the pass date.
Current valid learner permitMust not be expired. If it has expired, renew it before applying for the full licence.
Proof of addressSame requirements as above — dated within 3 months.
Eye test report (D502)Less than 1 month old.
Completed D401 application formFor full licence applications. Download from ndls.ie.
€55 feePayable by card or cash.

Licence exchange (EU licence)

EU licence exchange documents

Your current EU driving licence (original)Will be surrendered and returned to the issuing country. You will not get it back.
Proof of address in IrelandDated within 3 months.
PPS numberRequired for all applicants.
Eye test report (D502)Less than 1 month old.
Completed D401 formDownload from ndls.ie.
€55 feeStandard exchange fee.

Renewal documents

Renewal documents

Current or recently expired licenceYour existing Irish driving licence.
Proof of addressOnly needed if your address has changed since your last licence was issued.
Eye test report (D502)Required if you are over 70, or if prompted by the NDLS system. Check ndls.ie for your specific situation.
Completed D401 formOr complete online at ndls.ie if renewing online.
€55 feeStandard renewal fee for a 10-year licence.
Don't let your licence expire by more than 10 yearsIf your licence has been expired for more than 10 years, you may be required to sit the theory test and driving test again before a new one is issued.
