How to book your NDLS appointment

1

Go to ndls.ie

Click "Book an Appointment". You'll be asked which type of application you're making — learner permit, full licence, renewal, or exchange. Select the correct one.

2

Choose your centre

There are NDLS centres across Ireland. If your nearest centre has a long wait, check surrounding towns — availability varies significantly. Centres in smaller towns often have shorter wait times than Dublin or Cork city centres.

3

Select a date and time

Appointments are typically available in 20-minute slots during business hours. You'll receive a confirmation email — save it. You can reschedule up to 24 hours in advance at no charge.

What happens at the appointment

1

Check in at reception

Arrive 5 minutes early. Show your appointment confirmation. You'll be given a queue number and asked to wait.

2

Document check

A staff member will go through all your documents one by one. If anything is missing or incorrect — expired eye test, wrong form, missing address proof — the application cannot proceed. You'll need to rebook.

3

Photo taken

Your photo is taken at the centre. You don't need to bring your own passport photos. You'll be asked to remove glasses unless you need them to drive. Ensure your face is fully visible and not obscured.

4

Signature captured

Your signature is captured digitally on a pad. This appears on your licence.

5

Payment

Pay the application fee — €35 for a learner permit, €55 for a full licence or renewal. Card or cash accepted.

6

Temporary licence issued (sometimes)

For some applications, you'll receive a paper temporary licence to use while your plastic card is being processed. For learner permits, you may receive the permit card on the day. For full licences, the card is posted to your address within 5–10 working days.

Common reasons applications fail at the NDLS

Missing or incorrect documents are the number one reason for failed appointmentsGo through the full checklist at documents required before attending. The NDLS cannot process incomplete applications — you'll have to rebook and start again.

Other common issues: eye test older than 1 month, application form incomplete, proof of address older than 3 months, theory test certificate expired (over 2 years old), learner permit expired before applying for full licence.
