What is the theory test?
The Irish driving theory test is a computer-based multiple-choice test administered at approved test centres across Ireland. It tests your knowledge of the Rules of the Road, road signs, and hazard perception. You must pass it before you can apply for a learner permit.
The test is available in multiple languages, including English, Irish, Polish, Romanian, French, Spanish, Lithuanian, Latvian, and others. Select your preferred language when booking.

How to book the theory test
Go to theorytest.ie
This is the official booking website operated by Prometric on behalf of the RSA. You'll need a valid email address and payment card.
Select your licence category
Most people select Category B (car). Different categories have different tests — motorcycle (A), truck (C), and bus (D) are separate. Select the correct one.
Choose test centre and language
There are theory test centres in most major towns. Select your preferred language at this point — you cannot change it after booking without cancelling and rebooking.
Pay €45
Payment by card only at theorytest.ie. You'll receive a confirmation email with your booking reference. Bring this and photo ID to the test centre.
On the day of the test
Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment. Bring photo ID (passport, driving licence, or Public Services Card) and your booking reference. You'll be asked to leave all personal items in a locker — phones, bags, and notes are not permitted in the test room.
The test takes approximately 45 minutes. You'll know your result immediately when you finish. A pass certificate is printed on the spot if you pass.
If you fail
There is no waiting period after failing — you can rebook immediately at theorytest.ie. There is no limit on how many times you can sit the test. The fee of €45 applies each time.
The test software shows you which topics you answered incorrectly after finishing — use this to focus your study for your next attempt.
