Typical processing times

2–4 weeks

Smaller counties — straightforward applications

Complete applications with all documents submitted correctly. Councils like Leitrim, Roscommon, and Longford typically process faster.

4–8 weeks

Medium councils — standard wait

Normal range for most councils when the application is complete. Worth a check-in call after 6 weeks if you've heard nothing.

8–16 weeks

Dublin and high-demand areas

Dublin City Council and other high-volume councils can take 3–4 months or more. This is unfortunately normal but worth following up actively.

Keep paying rent while you wait HAP does not backdate payments. Your landlord must be paid during the waiting period — HAP will only pay from the date of approval going forward.
