Typical processing times
Smaller counties — straightforward applications
Complete applications with all documents submitted correctly. Councils like Leitrim, Roscommon, and Longford typically process faster.
Medium councils — standard wait
Normal range for most councils when the application is complete. Worth a check-in call after 6 weeks if you've heard nothing.
Dublin and high-demand areas
Dublin City Council and other high-volume councils can take 3–4 months or more. This is unfortunately normal but worth following up actively.
What makes applications take longer
- 1
Missing documents
The most common cause. The council puts the application on hold waiting for you to send what's missing — sometimes without contacting you. Always submit a complete application.
- 2
Self-employment income
Harder to verify than payslips. Self-employed applications consistently take longer because the means test requires more analysis.
- 3
Incomplete landlord section
If your landlord missed a field or didn't sign correctly, the application stalls until it's corrected.
- 4
High application volumes
Some councils are simply overwhelmed. Not much you can do except follow up regularly and politely.
