Does your stamp type qualify?
Your IRP card shows your stamp type. This determines whether you can work and access public services in Ireland โ and whether you'll be approved for a PPS number.
โ QualifiesStamp 4
Full access to work and public services. Standard for long-term residents, recognised refugees, and people with leave to remain.
โ QualifiesStamp 1
Work permit holders. Can get a PPS number to start work. Limited access to some public services.
โ QualifiesStamp 1G
Graduate permission โ can get PPS for work purposes.
โ QualifiesStamp 5
Without condition as to time โ full unrestricted access.
โ Qualifies (limited)Stamp 2
Student permission. Can get PPS to work limited hours (up to 20hrs/week during term). Access to some services.
โ Does not qualifyStamp 3
Cannot work. Access to PPS very limited โ mainly for specific purposes like tax filing or accessing family benefits.
Documents required
Valid passportOriginal passport only. Photocopies not accepted.
IRP card (Irish Residence Permit)Your current IRP card showing stamp type and expiry date. Must be valid.
Proof of address in IrelandUtility bill, bank statement, or official letter dated within last 3 months showing your Irish address.
Evidence of needJob offer letter, work permit, employer letter, or other document showing why you need the PPS number now.
IRP must be current โ not expiredIf your IRP has expired, you need to renew it before applying for a PPS number. An expired IRP will result in your appointment being refused.
