How the renewal process works

HSE sends a renewal letter

About 8 weeks before your card expires, the HSE posts a renewal notice. It will ask you to confirm your details have not changed, or to submit updated income and address documents.

Renew online at medicalcard.ie

The fastest way to renew is online. Log in with your PPS number and follow the renewal prompts. If your circumstances have not changed, renewal can take just a few minutes.

Return the paper form if sent one

Some renewal letters include a paper form. Complete it, include updated documents if your income has changed, and post it back promptly.

Do not wait for the letter if your card is expiringIf your card is expiring within the next 2 months and you have not received a renewal letter, contact the HSE PCRS on 0818 22 44 78 to request a renewal pack.

What to report when renewing

If anything has changed since your last application — new job, change in income, new household members, new address — you must update this information during the renewal. Failing to report changes can result in your card being withdrawn.
