Medical cards are means-tested. Your weekly income after standard deductions is compared to the income guidelines for your household. Check the current income limits before applying.

Apply online at medicalcard.ie
The easiest way is online at medicalcard.ie. You'll fill in your personal details, income information, and upload supporting documents. You can save your progress and return to it.

Or apply by post with Form MC1
If you prefer paper, download Form MC1 from hse.ie, fill it in, and post it with your supporting documents to the HSE Primary Care Reimbursement Service.

Include all required documents
Missing documents are the main cause of delays and refusals. Include proof of income, proof of address, PPS numbers for everyone in the household, and any relevant medical or financial documents.

Wait for assessment โ usually 15 working days
The HSE PCRS assesses your application. If approved, your card arrives by post. If they need more information, they'll write to you.
