Moving Address While on Rent Supplement

Moving to a new home doesn't mean your Rent Supplement automatically moves with you. Here's exactly what you need to do โ€” and when to do it โ€” to avoid any gap in your payments.

Don't assume your payment continues automaticallyRent Supplement is approved for a specific address. If you move without notifying the DSP, your existing payment will not cover your new rent โ€” and continuing to receive it without telling them is an overpayment.

What to do when you move

1

Tell your CWO before or as soon as you move

Contact your community welfare officer at your Intreo Centre and let them know you are moving. You should do this before the move if possible, or on the day you move at the latest. Don't wait until you're settled in โ€” payments can lapse.

2

Get your new landlord to complete a fresh SWA 3C

Your new landlord must complete and sign a new landlord declaration form (SWA 3C). This covers the new property address, the new rent amount, and your new landlord's details. Without this, your Rent Supplement cannot be updated.

3

Provide your new tenancy agreement

Bring your new signed lease or tenancy agreement showing the new property address, the new monthly rent, and both your name and your new landlord's name.

4

Check the rent is within the maximum limit for your county

If your new rent is higher than the Rent Supplement maximum limit for your county and household size, you may not be able to get the full amount covered. Check the current limits before you sign a new lease if possible.

5

Submit the updated information to your CWO

Bring your new lease, the completed SWA 3C from your new landlord, and your new proof of address to your Intreo Centre. Your CWO will update your claim and confirm your new payment amount.

Documents needed for the move

๐Ÿ“‹ What to bring when notifying your CWO

New tenancy agreement or leaseSigned by both you and your new landlord, showing the new address and monthly rent.
Completed SWA 3C from your new landlordYour new landlord's declaration form, completed and signed. Your new landlord must be RTB-registered and provide their PPS number.
Proof of new addressAny official document showing your name and new address. This may be your tenancy agreement itself if it clearly states your address.
Your photo IDPassport or driving licence โ€” you may need to re-verify your identity if you're moving to a different Intreo area.

Moving to a different county

If you are moving to a different county or a different Intreo Centre's catchment area, your case will be transferred to the new local office. This can cause a short delay in payments. Let your current CWO know as early as possible so the transfer is arranged before you move.

Maximum rent limits vary by countyEvery county has different maximum rent limits for Rent Supplement. If you are moving to Dublin, Cork, or other higher-cost areas, the limits are higher โ€” but if you are moving from a city to a rural county, your maximum may be lower than your current rent. Check the limits before committing to a new tenancy.

If your new rent is higher than the maximum limit

If your new rent exceeds the Rent Supplement maximum limit for your county and household size, your payment will be calculated at the limit, not the actual rent. You will have to pay the difference yourself from your social welfare payment. In some cases, your CWO can approve a higher payment if there are exceptional circumstances โ€” speak to them directly if this applies.

Don't sign a new lease before checking the limitsIf you sign a lease with rent above the maximum limit for your area, you could be left with a rent gap you cannot afford. Always confirm the limits with your CWO before committing to a new tenancy.
