How to Apply for Rent Supplement

Applying for Rent Supplement is done through your local community welfare officer โ€” not online. Here's exactly what to do, step by step.

You apply in person, not onlineRent Supplement applications are submitted to your local community welfare officer (CWO) at your Intreo Centre or local DSP office. There is no online portal for this.

Step-by-step: how to apply

1

Check you're eligible

Before anything else, confirm you meet the basic rules โ€” you must be receiving a qualifying social welfare payment, have been renting for at least 6 months (or have an urgent housing need), and not be working full-time. See the eligibility guide if you're unsure.

2

Find your local Intreo Centre

Rent Supplement is administered by the DSP through your local Intreo Centre or social welfare office. Find your nearest office on gov.ie or call the DSP on 0818 800 024.

3

Get the application form (SWA 1)

Ask for the Rent Supplement application form at your local office. The main form is called the SWA 1. You'll also need a separate form for your landlord to complete โ€” the SWA 3C (landlord declaration).

4

Complete the SWA 1 form

Fill in the SWA 1 with your personal details, household income, current rent, and landlord information. Take your time โ€” errors or missing sections are the most common cause of delays. If you need help, photograph the form at helpmyform.com and get field-by-field guidance in your language.

5

Give the SWA 3C to your landlord

Your landlord must complete and sign the landlord declaration form (SWA 3C). This confirms the tenancy details, the rent amount, and that the landlord is registered with the RTB. Your landlord must have a valid PPS number and be RTB-registered.

6

Gather your documents

Collect all supporting documents โ€” your photo ID, proof of address, proof of your social welfare payment, your lease or tenancy agreement, and any other documents relevant to your situation. See the documents guide for the full checklist.

7

Submit everything to your CWO

Bring the completed SWA 1, the landlord's SWA 3C, and all supporting documents to your Intreo Centre. Your CWO will review everything and assess your claim. They may ask for additional information.

8

Wait for a decision

If your application is complete, a decision is typically made within 4โ€“6 weeks, though urgent cases can be processed faster. You'll receive a letter with the outcome. If approved, payments begin from the date your application was received.

If you need help urgently

If you are at risk of losing your home or have no other means to pay your rent this week, tell your CWO immediately. Urgent Rent Supplement payments can be approved quickly in genuine emergencies. Don't wait โ€” go to your Intreo Centre in person and explain your situation.

Don't let rent arrears build upIf you're already behind on rent while waiting for a decision, keep your landlord informed. Rent arrears can put your tenancy at risk even after Rent Supplement is approved.
