What a PPS number looks like
Every PPS number follows the same format โ seven digits followed by one or two letters.
Your PPS number never changes. Once assigned, it stays with you permanently โ even if you leave Ireland and return years later.
What your PPS number is used for
Starting work
Every employer in Ireland requires your PPS number before you can be paid legally. Without it you cannot be put on payroll.
Accessing healthcare
Medical cards, GP visit cards, and the public health system all require a PPS number to register.
Applying for HAP or social housing
You cannot apply for housing assistance, rent supplement, or social housing without a PPS number.
Social welfare payments
Jobseeker's Allowance, Child Benefit, One-Parent Family Payment โ all require a PPS number to apply.
Banking
Most Irish banks require a PPS number to open a current account.
Education and childcare
Enrolling children in school, applying for the National Childcare Scheme, and third-level grants all need a PPS number.
Driving licence
Applying for or exchanging a driving licence in Ireland requires a PPS number.
Who needs a PPS number?
Anyone who lives or works in Ireland and needs to interact with Irish public services needs a PPS number. This includes EU and non-EU citizens, refugees, students, workers, and retirees. Children need their own PPS number too โ separate from their parents.
