PPS Number If You're Self-Employed in Ireland
Self-employed people, sole traders, and contractors all need a PPS number to register with Revenue and operate legally in Ireland. The tricky part is proving "evidence of need" when you don't have an employer letter.

What counts as evidence of need for self-employed
This is where self-employed applicants get stuck. You don't have a job offer letter from an employer. Here's what the Department of Social Protection accepts instead:

Letter from Revenue
A letter from the Revenue Commissioners confirming you need a PPS number to register for tax as a self-employed person. You can request this from Revenue directly.

Signed contract with a client
A signed contract or letter of engagement from an Irish business or client confirms you are actively trading.

CRO registration (if a company)
If you're registering a limited company, a Companies Registration Office confirmation letter is accepted as evidence of need.

HAP or welfare application (if also applying)
If you're applying for HAP or any social welfare payment at the same time, that application can serve as evidence of need.

Passport or IDEU citizens can use identity card. Non-EU citizens need passport + IRP card.
Proof of address in IrelandUtility bill, bank statement, or official letter dated within last 3 months.

After you get your PPS number — register with RevenueOnce you have your PPS number, register as self-employed with Revenue using myaccount.revenue.ie. You'll need it to file tax returns and receive payment legally.
