Working remotely for an Irish employer

Standard employment. Your employer asks for your PPS number to put you on payroll. Bring a letter of employment or job offer from your Irish employer as evidence of need.

Working remotely for a foreign employer from Ireland

You're living in Ireland but your employer is based abroad. If you're resident in Ireland for tax purposes, you still need a PPS number — and you're liable for Irish income tax. Bring a letter from your foreign employer confirming you work for them from Ireland, and a letter from Revenue confirming you need to register.

Digital nomad / freelancer in Ireland

If you're based in Ireland and earning income here — even from abroad — you need a PPS number to register with Revenue. A signed client contract or a letter from Revenue requesting your registration is your evidence of need.

Register with Revenue after getting your PPS numberIf you're working for a foreign employer or as a freelancer, you're responsible for filing your own tax return in Ireland — Revenue won't receive PAYE from your employer automatically. Register at myaccount.revenue.ie once you have your PPS number.
