The good news โ€” you're the target applicant

Rent Supplement was created for people in precisely your situation: someone who was renting privately, lost their job, and is now on a social welfare payment while they look for work. If you are on Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit and have been renting, you will meet the core social welfare eligibility condition.

What you need to check

โœ…
You must have been renting for at least 6 monthsYou must have been in private rented accommodation for the 6 months immediately before applying. If you've recently moved to a new place, you need evidence of where you were renting before.
๐Ÿ“
Your rent must be within the DSP limitsDSP sets maximum rent limits for each county and household size. If your current rent is above the limit, your landlord must agree to reduce it โ€” otherwise you cannot get Rent Supplement for that property.
๐Ÿ’ถ
You must pass the means testDSP assesses your total income. If you have savings, a partner's income, or other income sources, these are counted. The payment amount is reduced accordingly. You must contribute at least โ‚ฌ30 per week from your own income.
๐Ÿ†”
You must have a PPS numberYou cannot apply for Rent Supplement without a PPS number. If you don't have one, apply for it first at your local Intreo Centre.

What happens when you find work?

This is the critical thing to understand. If you find full-time work (30 or more hours per week), your Rent Supplement stops immediately. You must inform DSP as soon as your circumstances change.

If you find part-time work, your payment may continue at a reduced rate. The first โ‚ฌ75 per week of part-time earnings is not counted against you, but anything above that reduces your payment.

Planning to go back to work?If there's a chance you'll find full-time work soon, it's worth exploring HAP at the same time. HAP continues even in full-time employment. Speak to your local council's housing department about getting assessed for HAP while you're on Rent Supplement.

How long can you receive it?

Rent Supplement has no fixed end date โ€” it continues as long as you remain on a qualifying social welfare payment and meet the other conditions. However, DSP reviews it periodically, and if your circumstances change (you find work, your rent changes, or your household composition changes), your payment will be reassessed or stopped.

Always report changesYou are legally required to tell DSP if your income changes, you find work, someone moves in or out of your household, or you change address. Failing to report changes can result in overpayments that you'll have to repay.
