How to Apply for Jobseeker's Benefit

Apply for Jobseeker's Benefit at your local Intreo centre. The application process is in person. Claim as early as possible โ€” your entitlement runs from your claim date, not your approval date.

Before you go

You need a PPS number before you can apply. You also need to have your PRSI record in order โ€” if you have recently left employment, your employer should have submitted your P45 or final payroll information to Revenue. The DSP checks this automatically.

Documents to bring

  • Valid photo ID โ€” passport, driving licence, or IRP card
  • PPS number โ€” any official document showing it
  • Proof of address โ€” utility bill, bank statement, or official letter within 3 months
  • Bank account IBAN โ€” for direct payment
  • P45 from your employer, or letter confirming end of employment (if available)
  • Last 3 months payslips if you have them

Step by step

Claim from day one of unemploymentYour JB entitlement runs from the date you claim โ€” not the date it is approved. Do not wait. The sooner you claim, the more of your entitlement period you preserve.

What if your PRSI record is incorrect

If the DSP's assessment of your PRSI record shows fewer contributions than you believe you have paid, you can request a review. Employers are legally required to submit payroll data to Revenue โ€” if your employer failed to do this, contact Revenue directly. PRSI record disputes can take time to resolve but your entitlement is backdated once confirmed.
