Overview of the process
You cannot apply for a PSC online and have it posted to you. The entire point of the PSC is that your identity has been verified in person. You must attend a SAFE appointment at a DSP Intreo centre or a designated appointment location. The appointment itself takes around 15โ20 minutes.
Step by step
- 1
Book an appointment
Go to mywelfare.ie or call your local Intreo centre to book a SAFE registration appointment. Appointments are in person. In some areas there are dedicated PSC appointment offices separate from the main Intreo office.
- 2
Gather your documents
You need to bring identity documents, proof of address, and your PPS number. The exact documents depend on your nationality and circumstances. See our full documents guide for the complete list.
- 3
Attend the appointment
A DSP officer will check your documents, take your photograph, and capture your signature. They may ask you questions to verify your identity. The appointment is straightforward โ it is not an interrogation, just an identity check.
- 4
Receive your card by post
Your PSC is mailed to your address in Ireland, usually within 2โ3 weeks of the appointment. If you have not received it after 4 weeks, contact the PSC helpline or your Intreo centre.
How long does it take?
The appointment itself is 15โ20 minutes. The card typically arrives within 2 weeks of the appointment, though it can take up to 4 weeks during busy periods. Booking an appointment can take 1โ2 weeks depending on availability in your area.
Can you speed up the process?
There is no official fast-track. However, if you urgently need a social welfare payment, a DSP officer at the Intreo counter may be able to register you at the same visit without a prior appointment in some circumstances. Call your local Intreo centre to ask. This is not guaranteed but is sometimes possible.
