If your IRP is lost or stolen, report it immediately and apply for a replacement. Without the physical card you cannot prove your immigration status to employers or services.

Report it first

Go to your local Garda station and report the loss or theft. Get a Garda report or crime reference number — you will need this at the replacement appointment. If stolen, a report is especially important as the card contains biometric data.

Getting a replacement

Your permission is on the system — not the cardThe GNIB system records your permission. The physical card is just the token. Your status does not change when you lose the card — but proving it becomes difficult without one, which is why a fast replacement matters.

While waiting for the replacement

A letter from the GNIB confirming your registration can be used as temporary evidence of status. Contact the GNIB or your local Garda station to request one while the replacement is being processed.
