The process
- 1
Sponsor applies to ISD
The person in Ireland applies to Immigration Service Delivery for family reunification permission. Apply online or by post with supporting documents including evidence of the relationship, sponsor's financial situation, and current IRP.
- 2
Family member applies for entry visa (if needed)
If the family member's nationality requires a visa to enter Ireland, they apply for a Long Stay D visa at the nearest Irish embassy or consulate, referencing the family reunification approval letter.
- 3
Family member enters Ireland and registers
Once in Ireland, the family member registers with the GNIB for their own IRP.
What stamp type family members receive
Family members of Critical Skills permit holders typically receive Stamp 1G (work permission). Family members of Stamp 4 holders may initially receive Stamp 3 (no work rights), with the possibility of upgrading. The exact stamp depends on the sponsor's status and current ISD policy.
